With a name like Moby Grape you might expect some cheesy psychedelic crap, but this is way more like the Byrds/Buffalo Springfield Folk Country rock meets Jefferson Airplane/Grateful Dead folk country rock. Good songs good record.

This recording from 1968 is a bunch of Hendrix and Cream type covers. Maybe the best cover of Purple Haze I've heard. They give the covers their own personality a couple of the songs sound like they're 3/4 speed or something. Interesting stuff, but hardly essential.

Charlie Musselwhite's South Side Band - Stand Back Here Comes

Groovy blues similar to early Bluesbreakes.

The Vanguard Records release brought Musselwhite to notability among blues musicians and also helped bridge the gap between blues and rock and roll, musically and in marketing.- Wikipedia

Rolling Stones - Between The Buttons

Transition record for the Stones. They must have been running out of R&B songs to cover. This isn't quite psychedelic yet. Some non rock instruments going on as well as piano. All these songs are in the same zone and it's a unique one.

Amboy Dukes - Amboy Dukes

Ragin' blues rockin Baby Please Don't Go. Psychedelic rock too. George Thorogood meets Cream. They've got an early Stones thing going on too. These guys have an attitude.

Liverpool Five - Out Of Sight

They've got an Animals thing going on. A little bit of Yardbirds/Kinks. British envasion type stuff sounds like they're a little behind the times. I still can't believe they don't sound like the Beatles. They cover My Generation and stay true to the original. Hoochie Coochie Man. These guys are alright. Not cutting any edges though.Followers.

Dara Puspita - A Go-Go

Girl garage rock from Japan. They sound like The 5,6,7,8's, you know, that band from Kill Bill. They sing in Japanese and English. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference. Groovy stuff.

Captain Beefheart - Safe As Milk

Bluesy hillbilly rock.

The Monkees - Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones

Catchy pop songs, catchy light psychedelic pop, but mostly catchy songs probably by the guy who writes songs for Tom Jones and various adult contempories/Las Vegas acts. The songs are good, but bland. I nice gift for your friends who aren't really into music...or your mom.
Songs written in the style of other popular songs of the day...and some filler.

Vanilla Fudge - Vanilla Fudge

Swirling fluttering keyboards. Cover songs that they drag out. Screaming and church choir harmonies. There's a heaviness without actually being heavy. Bombastic hippiness. These guys must be on drugs 'cuz they're really draggin' this out. Vanilla Fudge was really ahead of the curve with this one. It's excessive stadium rock that would come a few years later, but they're still grounded with the hippie vocals you might expect in '67.
They're really hitting their stride when the get to You Keep Me Hanging On/Take Me For A Little While midway through the album. Sounds like Grand Funk Railroad at their best a couple years before Grand Funk Railroad was even on the scene. The album flows real well and has a certain psychedeliness to it that's both good and bad. I usually don't have the patience for this album, but I really dig that middle section. This should be the soundtrack to Hair the Musical. Dirty hippies.

The Kinks - Something Else By The Kinks

Mostly mellow story telling tunes. Pleasant enough, but there's several Kinks records I like more than this one.

The Yardbirds - Little Games

Starting to pull away from the blues here. There's still a couple blues songs with some smokin' guitar but the other songs are more in the pop direction like the Kinks or even Pink Floyd. Unfocused.

Albert King - Born Under A Bad Sign

If I'm not mistaken Albert Kings' guitar playing is a cornerstone of all things rock. A big influence on Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page ect. These are easy goin' blues songs that more often than not you want the songs to continue, but they fade out. For the jukebox I suppose...did anyone play this on the radio at the time. Horn accompanyment that's fits great not overbearing but very complimentary. Urban Blues.

Savoy Brown Blues Band - Shake Down

Tasty Blues rock. For fans of early Fleetwood Mac. Although this may be slighty more rockin'.

The Action - Rolled Gold

Real catchy psychedelic pop. These songs really sound like they could be 90's indie songs from bands like Pavement or Sebadoh.

Canned Heat - Canned Heat

The best band you ever saw down at the ol' barn stomp. Blues rock. Keepin' it real.

Pink Floyd - Piper At The Gates Of Dawn

It's simple it's complicated and all psychedelic. See you when you get back.
