Krokus - Dirty Dynomite

2013
There's a lot of AC/DC records I'm gonna have to wear out before I resort to this

Enforcer - Death By Fire

 2013

A 2013 release that sounds very much like the early 80's Speedy Heavy Metal with some glamorous vocals. A blend of the first Metallica and Def Leppard albums and a NWOBHM blur into LA glam.

-Speed Metal in the style of Exciter. Good stuff.

Fight Amp - Birth Control

2012
If it was 1993 again this might be the only record I listen to. Noise rock!

Votum - Harvest Moon

2013
I'm on the fence about this one. At their best they've got a Pink Floyd/Queensryche progressive Metal thing going on. They've also got some really whimpy vocals that knock 'em down a notch for me. They introduce some "modern" elements, they all make me cringe. There's also some non metal rhythms going on once in a while that make 'em sound like Pablo Cruise Metal. Overall I like the music...This is Metal for girls. For me personally it probably works best as background music.

-Rory says they sound like Incubus.

Heavy Rotation - February 2013

  • Enslaved - RIITIIR (2012)
  • Portal - Vexovoid (2013)
  • Christian Mistress - Possession (2012)

Cult Of Luna - Vertikal

2013
First impression. Post rock bores me.

-They do on occasion  add some blips and bleeps that remind me a bit of an 80's movie soundtrack.

Master - The New Elite

2012
If Master hadn't been around so long you could say this sounds like a new band heavily influenced by early East Coast Thrash. They say Master is a Death Metal band, but before there was Death Metal there was Master and it was all just Thrash back then. Not reinventing the wheel here. Master is Master.

Baroness - Green & Yellow

 2012

Before I listened to this I heard terms like "Post-Grunge" thrown around to describe it. I thought that was a funny term. Turns out that's a's good a description as any. Especially if you don't like "Indie".

Christian Mistress - Possession

2012

It's like  semi progressive NWOBHM with Mia Zapata singing. Lots of licks but the head bobbin' never stops. Barely above average production values.

Candlemass - Psalms For The Dead

Traditional 80's type Doom Metal like...Candlemass.

-This is good. Really good even. Nothing new or surprising.

Heavy Rotation - January 2013

  • Torche - Harmonicraft (2012)
  • Christian Mistress - Possession (2012)
  • Iron Maiden - Powerslave (1984)
  • Witch Mountain - Cauldron Of The Wild (2012)
  • OM - Advatic Songs (2012)
  • Portrait - Crimen Laesae Majestatis Divinae (2011)
  • Pig Destroyer - Book Burner (2012)
  • Blue Aside - The Orange Tree (2010)

The Cult - Choice Of Weapon

2012
Sounds like the Cult I remember. This is completely forgettable.

Marilyn Manson - Born Villain

2012
This doesn't sound any different than any other Marilyn Manson I've ever heard. It's OK I suppose but nothing I ever ever want to listen to.

The Sword - Apocryphon

2012
These songs sound completely interchangeable with any songs from the first Sword album. I guess that's a good thing if you're a fan.

Anaal Nathrakh - Vanitas

2012
Pissed Grind/Blast/Black/Death Metal. It's like a Black Metal Pig Destroyer. This kicks my ass all over the place.

Hail Spirit Noir - Pneuma

2012
Folky somber depressed Black Metal with good production. Probably more in common with 80's Goth music than 80's Metal. More for the girls than the guys except there are some scary Black Metal vocals that will scare all girls away. There's also clean Eddie Vedder type Black Metal vocals that will scare the teenage boys away.  The interesting thing here is the touches of psychedelic sounds. Similar to late 60's Pink Floyd.

H.E.A.T. - Address The Nation

2012

These guys have really got the Bon Jovi thing down. The keyboards drive the cheese factor through the roof.

The Faceless - Planetary Duality

2008
Progressive/Technical Death Metal. First impression made me think about the inhumanly fast drums and super human starts and stops, but after more listens I forgot all about that stuff. Now it's just nutty Technical metal that does not suck. These guys make it work. Album seems pretty short which actually helps.

Demonic Death Judge - SkyGods

2012
Falling somewhere between Bongzilla and Acid King, Demonic Death Judge do it up right. Their previous album, The Descent,  was one of my favorites from 2011. They don't express as many ideas here, but let you get lost in the groove vibe of the riff instead.

Witchchrist - The Grand Tormenter

2012
Rumbling wall of heavy crushing that is blackened and crushing and it goes really slower for a while and goes really fast for a while tempo changes happen when you need them. The guys remind me a bit of Acid Witch, but Witchchrist seem more "serious". I hear the Entombed influence burried in there as well.

-Blackened Sludge and Death Metal.

Saint Vitus - Lillie: F-65

2012
Traditional Doom or whatever. It's all about the vibe and this one's got it.

Cattle Decapitation - Monolith Of Inhumanity

 2012

Cattle Decapitation have turned it up a notch! They've gone beyond the generic Death/Grind and added some elements and all of a sudden they've distanced themselves from the crowd.

Deftones - Koi No Yokan

 2012
This is the first Deftones record that I've listened to all the way through. Soaring vocals dominate. Heavy tunes that feel mostly sad. Sad teenage girl songs with heavy music for teenage boys. This one doesn't feel quite a monotonous...As far as I know there's no other bands that sound quite like the Deftones. Mostly because of the vocals. These songs are instantly recognizable as the Deftones. This album creates a nice atmosphere psychedelic metal.

Crazy Lixx - Riot Avenue

 2012
I read on the internet that 2012 wasn't a good year for Glam Metal. Well obviously the internet hasn't heard the new Crazy Lixx.

Grand Magus - The Hunt

 2012
If Judas Priest covered Deep Purples' Perfect Strangers. Epic and Triumphant NWOBHM rockin'. Grand Magus is an Awesome band.

Diesel King - The Ancient And The Nameless

 2012
Pantera/Eyehategod Groove/Sludge/Stoner Metal.

Deathspell Omega - Drought

 2012
Post Black Technical Progressive Chaos Metal.
